The Gift of Discernment

“Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning…” –Proverbs 10:13a
I have a friend who defines the spiritual gift of discernment as the ability to know where God is and where He isn’t. I like this definition, especially when I put it up beside the Apostle Paul’s closing words to the church at Philippi: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Phil. 4:8). Every quality on Paul’s list is a positive attribute of God; a facet of His character. He is the One who is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. To see these characteristics in action is to see where God is, and where—by His Spirit—He’s actively engaged with believers.
On the other hand, if we know that these attributes of God help us discern where He is, what helps us know where He isn’t? Well, I’m glad you asked! It turns out that God gave us a list for that, too. It’s found in the wisdom writings of Solomon: “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up dissension in the community” (Prov. 6:16).
As events we often don’t understand and/or dislike unfold in the world around us, we can find hope, guidance, and direction from God’s Word and God’s spiritual gifts. We don’t have to cower and be afraid. God’s gift of discernment is the compass that will lead us safely into His arms.
Almighty God, You are worthy of all honor and praise! Thank You for giving us the gift of discernment to help us know and do Your will each day. In Your name we pray, Amen.
